How Three
Brothers Shared a «Trembitа»
Once, an old man lived in the Carpathian Mountains. He made musical instruments
to play melodies. He made them from birch tree.
One day three young men came and asked him to make them a horn from
birch tree. «But why only one –
you are three», said the old
man.
«We are too poor to have three. We shall share the one», they answered. The old man smiled and said, «Come back in spring. You will have a fine horn». And he worked the whole winter. But when spring came
and he wanted to write on the horn the names of the three brothers, he
remembered that he did not know the names of the three young men. So he asked
the old clever man of the village who said, «Write on it «Trem bratam» (which is the Ukrainian for «for three brothers»).
So when the mountains and fields became green and the shepherds took
their sheep out to eat grass, the three brothers got their instrument from the
old man and played it. They liked the music that it played. They had never
heard such fine music before.
The three brothers went home playing the horn, and everyone who heard it
liked it very much. For a long time after it people came from near and far to
look at the horn and to listen to its music. Those who could read told others
what was written on the horn. And so in that part of our country the shepherd’s
horn is known as the trembita.

One Girl’s Story of Love
During the baking hot months of the summer
holidays my mother and I used to escape to one of the scattered lakes north of
Prince Albert. In its magic surroundings we used to spend the long summer days
in the open air, swimming and canoeing or just lying dreaming in the sun. In
the evening the lake was always bright, luminous grey after the unbelievable
sunset colors had faded.
The last summer before we returned to England was
particularly enchanted. For one thing, I was in love for the first time. No one
will ever convince me that one cannot be in love at fifteen. I loved then as
never since, with all my heart and without doubts or reservations or pretence.
My boyfriend Don worked in Saskatoon, but the
lake was ''his place'' – the strange and beautiful wilderness drew him with an
obsessive urgency, so I suspected it was not to see me that he got on his
motor-cycle as many Fridays as he possibly could, and drove three hundred-odd
miles along the pitted prairie roads to spend the weekends at our place.
Sometimes he couldn't come, and the joy would go
out of everything until Monday, when I could start looking forward to Friday
again. He could never let us know in advance, as we were too far from
civilization to have a phone or even a telegraph service. Three hundred miles
in those conditions is quite a journey. Besides, Don was hard up, and sometimes
worked overtime at weekends.
One Friday night a storm broke out. I lay in bed
and listened to the thunder and the rain beating on the roof. Once I got up and
stood looking out over the treetops, shivering. I tried not to expect Don that
night hoping he would have enough sense to wait until the storm ended. Yet in
my frightened thoughts I couldn't help imagining Don fighting the storm. His
motorbike, which had always looked to me so heavy and solid, seemed in my
thoughts frail enough to be blown onto its side by the first gust that struck
it. I thought of Don pinned under it, his face pressed into the mud.
I crawled back into bed, trying to close my
throat against the tears. But when my mother, prompted by the deep sympathy and
understanding between us, came in to me, she kissed my cheek and found it wet.
"Don't get upset, Jane,'' she said softly.
''He may still come.''
When she had tucked me in and gone, I lay
thinking about Don, about the danger of the roads. You couldn't ride or walk
along them safely after heavy rain; your feet would slip from under you. The
roads in Northern Canada are not like the friendly well-populated English ones,
where there are always farmhouses within walking distance and cars driving
along them day and night.
It was hours later, that I suddenly realized the
sound of the roaring engine were real. The storm was dying.

Sports Camps
The camps are
not just limited to outdoor sports - we cover a wide range of indoor activities
as well. So if the rain comes, the camps continue, although you may have to
take off your football boots and pick up a squash racket instead. With the
experience we've gained over the years, we put together the right mix of sport
and activities providing sport for all, not just for those who are brilliant at
athletics. It is unnecessary to bring any equipment because it is all provided.
We work in
small groups, children working with others of their own age, but we do all come
together for social activities and meals. So, different members of a family can
make their own individual choices, but they get a chance to exchange their
experiences later on.
Our centres
offer first-class accommodation, food and facilities - and the staffs are
first-class too. Qualified teachers or professionals receive training from us,
and many work with us year after year. We always employ qualified staff for
activities such as swimming, tramlining and gymnastics, but some of the
assistants organizing the children's games are students, many of whom came to
the camp themselves when they were younger.
At most of
our centres, accommodation is in a hostel or tents. It is not possible for us
to arrange other accommodation, but we can send you a list of what is available
in the area. Most of the places are recommended to us, but not all, so we are
not responsible for the quality of the accommodation on this list. Luxury
accommodation is not available near our camps.
To book a
place at a sports camp, complete the form and send it with a cheque for the
deposit to the address below. The rest of the fee can be paid at any time, but

Day of the Swallows Estella Portillo Act I, Scene I
Josefa’s sitting room: it is a usually beautiful room, very feminine and done in good taste. The profusion of lace gives the room a delicate, ephemeral appearance. The lace pieces are lovely: needlepoint, hairpin, limerick, the work of patience and love. Upstage left is a large bay window; from it, one can view a large tree with a birdhouse of unusual size and shape, an orb that can accommodate a great number of birds. The room faces south, so it is flooded with light, which causes the lace to seem to melt into a peaceful serenity. To the right is a door leading to the kitchen; there is another door leading to the bedroom. Downstage left is a door leading to the outside.
When the curtain rises, Alysea is sitting on the floor. It is before dawn, but a minute or so after the curtain rises, light begins to fill the room. Alysea is cleaning the sitting room carpet, an unusual task for this hour. Next to her is a pail. She uses a piece of cloth with quick frantic movements, rinses, and continues the rubbing of the carpet. After a while, she looks at the cloth in her hand almost in trance, then with a growing horror. She drops it, raising herself to her knees; she stares at it, and then covers her face with her hands. She sits back on the floor leaning her head against a chair, looking helpless and lost. She is sobbing quietly. After a while, she stares at the new streaming light from the window, feline its warmth as a comfort. The sound of a milk bell interrupts the silence. When she hears it, she jumps up, looks desperately about the room, wipes the traces of tears from her eyes and goes to the window and looks ou Josefa’s room was unusually plain.
